Derby College is one of the largest, most successful andmost forward-thinking further education colleges in the UK. The Roundhouse campus is our iconic flagship site on PridePark in Derby, offering a stimulating and dynamic learning environment forvocational studies.    Opened following a£48 million regeneration of this historic site - including the world’s oldestsurviving railway roundhouse - the campus provides state-of-the-art learningfacilities with the very latest technology and industry-standardequipment.  

The Roundhouse is a superb base for courses in subjectssuch as art and design; hair, beauty and holistic therapies; catering andhospitality; engineering; business; care; ICT; retail; and travel andtourism. 

Also on the campus, the modern Roundhouse Johnson Buildingis home to first class facilities for our sports and motor vehicle engineeringstudents.  In addition, it providesprofessional training facilities andservices for our many partners from the public, private and voluntary sectors. 

The newestaddition to the campus is creating a real buzz in the construction world. TheRoundhouse Hudson Building, our £3.6 million construction skills centre, hasjust opened its doors.

How to apply...

How to apply for post-16 courses

1. If you are not sure which area you would like tostudy, please visit one of our informationevenings and have a chat with our enthusiastic and friendlystaff. You may also like to talk over your choices with your ConnexionsAdvisor. You can also check out our online Course Searchand Subject Areapages to find out more about our various courses.

2. When you have made your decision, you simply needto submit an online application. You’ll find an application form on all course detailpages of our website. You can apply for a course directlyfrom any course page.If you have problems submitting your application electronically, please contactus immediately.

If you are not quite sure which course would suit youbest, but would still like to apply to the College, you can request advice andguidance when making your application.

3. You will then be invited for an interview with amember of staff from the subject area in which you are interested.  In most cases, you will also undertake anonline assessment of your Maths and English which will enable us to ensure youare on the right level of course.  Thewhole interview and assessment process will take around two hours.  After your interview, you will be contacted bythe College informing you of the outcome and the next steps.  

4. During August you will be sent a pack through thepost with dates and times for your Welcome Day and enrolment.

5. The Welcome Day takes place in August/September,when there will be further opportunities for you to meet with staff to discussyour programme of study.

If you areunable to apply online, come along to our Learner Services offices at any ofour campuses and a member of the team will help you to complete yourapplication form.  We also have anAdditional Support Team who can support you with any additional needs you mayhave when completing your application.

What facilities do we have?

We offer state-of-the-art facilities, thanks to ouraward-winning campus regeneration.  And we continue to invest in first rate industry-standard equipment and resources tobring your learning to life.

The Roundhouse campus features several facilities which areopen to the public and where our students undertake practical hands-ontraining.  These include:

·       The Engine Shed Restaurant - our fine dining restaurant setting high standards of cuisine, innovative presentation andimpeccable service.

·       The SENSI hair and beauty salons - our popular training and commercial salons offering a wide range of treatments.

·       The Garage - an efficient and convenient facility for motorists run at the College during term time. Our students are the mechanics and are supervised by staff atall times. 

What childcare facilities and support do we have for our students who have children?

If you are a parent, you will want to feel reassured that your children are well cared for while you are studying.  We can help you find convenient and reliablechildcare of a high standard.

We are pleased to offer childcare through our own Little Explorers nursery at Broomfield Hall campus. The unique 54-place nursery, set in the picturesque grounds of the historic hall, provides high quality care for children aged from three months to five years.Clubs for older children also run during the school holidays.

All Little Explorers have access to the Broomfield Hall farm and extensive estate.  The curriculum involves activities such as sessions in the woodlands, gardens andthe Food Hub on campus.

What kind of personal support is available?

We offer awide range of facilities and support to make your student life a happy andenjoyable experience.  Our LearnerServices team provides daytime guidance and support Monday to Friday throughoutthe year.  You can make an appointment orsimply call in to meet a member of the team - Learner Services has a base ateach of our main campuses.

The LearnerServices team can:

* provideinformation and guidance to help you choose from a variety of study andtraining programmes, at Derby College and elsewhere

* advise onentry to higher education and employment

* offerinformation on grants, sources of finance and other money matters, includinghow to apply to the College for financial support

* provideadvice and support on personal matters - and refer you to other forms of helpas appropriate.

Your wellbeing is our top priority while you’re at College. Weaim to ensure all our learners are confident, healthy, safe, emotionallyresilient and personally fulfilled. Our Healthy FE programme covers manyaspects of College life, including healthy eating, physical activity, controlson smoking, active citizenship and clean environments. 

TheCollege’s Student Counselling Service is open to all students - full andpart-time - at all sites and outreach centres. It provides you with the opportunity to meet a counsellor on aone-to-one basis in a safe, confidential and non-judgemental setting to discussany difficulties you might be having.  

The DerbyCollege Students’ Union, meanwhile, is committed to representing students andproviding them with an excellent array of services.  Its main role is to promote the diverseinterests and needs of students.  

What enrichment activities do we offer?

We add value to all our courses with elements of enterprise,employability and enrichment. When you leave us, you’ll be a well-rounded andconfident individual well equipped to succeed in the next stage of your life.

As part ofyour course, many of you will have the opportunity to undertake work experienceand work placements, to go on industrial visits or to hear from inspirationalguest speakers.   You may also have thechance to take additional qualifications that will help you into employment.

We’llenrich your studies with new experiences too, such as national competitions,community projects and international collaborations. 

Sports, exercise andrecreation activities are organised throughout the week and the Students’Union, based on site, runs social events and activities which will broaden yourhorizons further still.

DerbyCollege is closer than you think.  Weare easy to reach, with central campuses in Derby and Derbyshire all served bygood public transport links.

We want everyone to get to College as easily, convenientlyand cheaply as possible. We’re working hard to make your journey easier –providing everything from shuttle buses to secure cycle parking, from lockersfor motorcycle helmets to easy-to-follow maps.

Our city-centre sites - the Roundhouse, the RoundhouseJohnson Building, the Roundhouse Hudson Building and the Joseph Wright Centre -are all easily accessible from most local areas by public transport. The Roundhouse, for instance, is a ten-minute walk from Derby busstation and right next to the train station. To make yourjourney more cost-effective, you can also take advantage of discount optionssuch as the b_line card.

And, of course, if you choose to walk, cycle or take publictransport to College, you’re doing your bit for the environment too.
